Flower & business design insights, inspiration, and advise for the modern day florist (or wannabe florist).
We get this question allot from new florists or anyone who wants to pursue floral design professionally. My number one tip is to get into a floral shop or floral department. Anything to submerge yourself in the day to day work of a florist. I honestly do not know how anyone would just jump into the field without some type of formal training or experience. The idea of putting yourself out there can be a little overwhelming at first, but with a little strategy you can up your chances for landing the dream job or client.
1. Polish Your Resume
Make sure to include any and all floral experience you might have. Formal training in floral design is a huge plus to any client or employer. It shows you are serious about your work and have training and education in professional floral design.
2. Have a Well Balanced Portfolio
Your portfolio should include images of your most recent work. If possible include from everyday designs, bridal, sympathy, corporate, and bridal work. You should also have a basic business card with your contact information on it. MF Graphics on Etsy does really fast and beautiful work. I personally use Moo for cards to stand out. Anything, really will do. You just need something for them to remember you by. A shop may not be hiring at the moment, but will keep your information to reach out on the next major holiday.
3. Be Prepared to Audition for the Position
Every florist is different. One might pull an order and have you fulfill it. You would have to choose the appropriate stock (flowers), and stay within the customers price. So you would have to know how much the arrangement should sell for. I touch on this in one of my pricing posts here.
4. Bonus: Where to look for Jobs & Internships
This is where you can get creative. However, if you are passive chances are it will take you allot longer to land something worthwhile. First, you would want to ask your neighborhood florist if they are hiring or would be interested in having you shadow the lead designer. Next, you could reach out to your local wholesaler. They interact with florists and floral shops everyday. They may have a job board, or be willing to pass your info along to a shop. Lastly, your neighborhood grocery store might have an opening in their floral department. In my opinion, the best time to get in where you fit in is 2-4 weeks before a major holiday.
